After a rather slow start to the evening, this edition turned out to be a very enjoyable one. Right until about 23.30 hours, the arena was still almost empty. This we thought was due to the change in the weather pattern during the weekend. For the first time in months, the temperature was close to 17 degrees so people apparently wanted to enjoy the weather before coming to the Africa Night. Who is to blame them? Initially the Africa Night crew had so little to do that even yours truly had time to play the cab driver and picked up a couple of our regular who were without a ride.
The slowness before 23.30 hours was just like the proverbial stillness before the storm. Just before midnight, guests started coming in hordes! It was a bit overwhelming for the crew members and we had to do our best to keep a little order at the door. One minute the arena was empty and you blinked an eye and the whole place was full to the brim! But the evening was really enjoyable with lots of good music and good fun all around. At the end of the show, we could see that our guests left feeling satisfied.
We made some new acquaintances (like Diana and Joyce who were there for the first time). We updated some old acquaintances (like Ivon who had been there a couple of times before and since a couple of months had become a member of our two forums). And then there was Cynthia. Cynthia studies (Psychology – University) in and lives close to Groningen. She is a regular visitor (along with her no longer camera shy boyfriend?) to Africa Night in Tilburg. You just have to feel blessed and honoured to entertain people like Cynthia. To put it in proper perspective; Cynthia travels more than 250 kilometres to visit Africa Night in Tilburg. That is at least a 500 kilometre roundtrip!
But she is not alone. People come from far and wide. After almost 10 years of Africa Night, one is able to look back to the dream that lead to this reality. It was a dream of bringing people of all races, sexes, ages, religion etc together using the unique Africa music as the common denominator. Yes, we are reliving the dream every month. Thank you all for walking out of our dream and becoming a part of our recurring reality. And yes, this is how Africa Night was always meant to be!
